Recipes Across Cultures

Recipes Across Cultures is a student-designed initiative that uses food as a way to explore identity, culture, and shared experience. Through simple, age-appropriate cooking activities and storytelling, students learn how food reflects family traditions, migration, and memory.

Cooking Activity

The project grew out of volunteer experiences with The HOME Project in Greece, where meals are an important part of daily life for refugee children from many different countries. By sharing recipes connected to those communities, Recipes Across Cultures invites students to see culture not as something distant, but as something lived and personal.

In classrooms and other educational settings, cooking becomes a starting point for conversation—helping students understand where food comes from, how traditions travel, and how different cultures can be connected through something familiar and shared.

Recipes Across Cultures is designed to be flexible and adaptable for different ages, timeframes, and classroom settings.

In a typical session, students:

  • Learn about a country or region through a shared recipe

  • Talk about how food connects to family, tradition, and identity

  • Prepare a simple dish together or explore ingredients through hands-on activities

  • Reflect on similarities between their own food traditions and those of others

Activities can be adapted for:

  • Cooking in a classroom or school kitchen

  • No-cook or low-prep recipes

  • Demonstration-style lessons

  • Cross-curricular learning (geography, history, language, art)

The focus is not on technical cooking skills, but on learning through participation and discussion.

Activities

Shared Meals: Family Recipe Activity

In this activity, students interview a family member about a meaningful meal, record the recipe, and answer reflection questions at home. They bring their completed pages back to class, where the recipes are shared and compiled into a class recipe book that highlights family traditions and connections across cultures.
